Where can you hear live music in Berkhamsted & HP4?

Berkhamsted and its surrounding villages are brimming with live music events. These range from jazz bands on a Saturday night to folk groups in our village halls to full concert orchestras. Here we share some of the brilliant musical event organisers in our local area:

Berkhamsted Campaign for Real Music presents folk group Breabach on 16 May at the Vyne Theatre

CLASSICAL

Berkhamsted Music

This classical music society, founded in 1954, holds five chamber music concerts a year in Berkhamsted and organise excursions to concerts at London venues. Their last concert presented the exquisite ensemble playing of The Villiers Quartet.

Concerts at St Peter’s Church

St Peter’s musical programme includes lunchtime recitals and evening concerts featuring both local artists and international soloists – all in the setting of this 800-year-old church. This is the venue where you can hear Berkhamsted’s orchestra, the Bridgewater Sinfonia. The sinfonia brings together professional musicians and amateurs to give four concerts a year, all of the highest quality.

The Vyne Theatre

The Vyne Theatre airs live opera from the Royal Opera House as part of the artsLIVE screening initiative. This means you can enjoy glorious arias without having to negotiate the London train. The next opera to be aired is Puccini’s Turandot (26 March)

JAZZ

BJazz at the Civic Centre

Berkhamsted Jazz (BJazz) present live jazz of all kinds in a relaxed club atmosphere and have been doing so for over 40 years. This month you can hear the first-class duo Alan Barnes on saxes and Dave Newton on piano (25 March).

FOLK/ACOUSTIC

Berkhamsted Campaign for Real Music

BCFRM organise gigs by professional acts, performing with integrity, style and showmanship. All of their gigs are presented in the beautiful space of the Vyne Theatre and they can sell out quickly. Their next gigs include stunning shows by The Urban Folk Quartet (14 April) and Breabach (16 May), so get your tickets now!

Little Gaddesden Folk, Roots and Blues Club

This lovely folk club brings the very best folk artists to this ‘little corner’ of the county. The club’s first gig for 2023 presented critically-acclaimed folk trio The Wilderness Yet at the Little Gaddesden Village Hall.

A BIT OF EVERYTHING: POP, ROCK, DANCE, INDIE….

BerkoFest

A firm favourite in our local diary is Berkofest. This family-friendly midsummer festival brings the best of local bands and music to Berkhamsted, with an eclectic range of genres. We can’t wait to hear what they have planned for 2023!

AND NOT FORGETTING OUR LOCAL PUBS

Many of Berkhamsted and HP4’s pubs host regular and one-off music events. The style might be acoustic or 90s dance, but you are sure to have a great night out. The George and The Dragon, The Goat, The Mad Squirrel, The George, The Rising Sun – we love our musical pubs.
