Profile
Tour includes the surviving servants’ quarter, kitchen garden with Victorian vinery and the awesome Great Barn, the largest in Herts! Berkhamsted Place was built by Sir Edward Carey, Keeper of the Queen’s Jewels (Elizabeth I), using material from the castle. From the 18th century onwards, it was frequently known as The Castle. Although little remains of the mansion itself, the area is rich in history. Tours will include the Great Barn which is even older than the mansion. Although the mansion was demolished in 1967, much interest still remains. There will be a small exhibition depicting the history of the Place, and of Reg Butler a sculptor who once lived here.
