Michael Mann (Heat, Miami Vice) jumps back into the director’s chair after nearly a decade away to bring us this thrilling, classically engineered racing drama.
Adam Driver plays the harassed, greying, paunchy Enzo Ferrari, the petrolhead hero turned owner of the legendary family business, grinding round and round the race-track circuit of his life in late 1950s Modena.
He and his wife Laura (Penélope Cruz) are grieving the death of their son Alfredo, while Enzo slinks off to a country property to spend time with his mistress Lina (Shailene Woodley) and their much younger son Piero, whom Enzo has never publicly acknowledged. On the racetrack, Enzo is increasingly outclassed by the upstarts at Maserati; looking for a win, looking for a way out of bankruptcy.
The race sequences have a horrible heart-in-mouth quality: you can feel the tumble of gravity working on your own insides – inches from disaster at any given moment, and all the more beautiful for it. This is a man with the world on his shoulders – a man who grimly sends his drivers into a race like a general sending his troops over the top.
