Stocks and shocks in this thoroughly entertaining take on the GameStop short squeeze saga.
Keith Gill is an achingly sincere, low-level financial analyst and securities broker who also masquerades as “Roaring Kitty”, a cat-art T-shirts donning, red sweatband wearing online financial messiah with a legion of followers. When Keith tells his fans he’s betting his life savings on gaming merchandise retailer GameStop and that this is their chance to stick it to the Man, he urges them to buy and then hold the line as stock soars by 30 times its value in a month, subsequently disrupting the Wall Street market and turning the financial world upside down.
It all plays out like a thrift-store version of Adam McKay’s The Big Short, diving through the looking glass into a world so complex and out of focus that even the major players sometimes seem utterly confused by what’s going on. However, lively performances from Paul Dano, Seth Rogen and Pete Davidson make sure the complex financial story never feels like a lecture.
Putting entertainment first, it’s a crowd-pleasing dramatisation of a now-legendary slice of financial history
