Kate Harwood, Conservation & Planning Officer for Hertfordshire Gardens Trust, delivers this lecture examining the Arts and Crafts Movement.
The Arts and Crafts movement sought to restore craftsmanship to the making of everyday items, which had been lost with the rise of the factory system. William Morris decreed ‘Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful’. Hertfordshire has a wealth of examples of houses, gardens, furniture and so on, as well as the two Garden Cities, which were built on Arts and Crafts principles.
