Berkhamsted Theatre, Dance and Performance

25 April 2023

What is better than watching performers live on the stage? The lights and sounds, sharing the experience as an audience. You may think you have to go to London to enjoy such thrills. But, in fact, you don’t have to at all.

Here are some of the theatrical highlights in Berkhamsted and HP4 this summer.

Outdoor Theatre: Robin Hood performed in the garden of Ashridge House

Ashridge House Outdoor Theatre

This year Ashridge House is treating us to not one, but two doses of outdoor theatre, thanks to their collaboration with Illyria Outdoor Theatre Company. First up, is Robin Hood, perfectly timed for the May half-term holiday.  Bring a picnic and watch this action-packed production! (31 May)

Then be whisked away to a mysterious coastal kingdom in Twelfth Night.  Enjoy an evening of yearning romance, music and sheer joy – all performed on a stage inspired by those of the Elizabethan touring troupes. (28 June)

Macbeth at Berkhamsted Castle

The tragedy of the Scottish king set in the ruins where William the Conqueror accepted the crown… This is Macbeth at Berkhamsted Castle by Drama Impact. As residents of a small town, Berkhamsted locals are so fortunate to have this 950-year-old heritage site on their doorstep; a production of Shakespeare’s tragedy in its grounds is sure to be an atmospheric experience. Choose from a matinee or evening performance. (17 June)

One way to encounter the performing arts is through local festivals and fairs. At Berkhamsted’s street party to mark the coronation of King Charles III (organised by Berkhamsted Town Council), you can enjoy live music from Lost Vox, After Eve, and Bridgewater School Choir, and singalongs with Kathryn Jenkin and Phillip Conway-Brown, as well as face painters, a bubbleologist, balloon modellers and magicians! Performances from the Royal Opera House are aired live at Berkhamsted’s Vyne Theatre.

Vyne Theatre

Berkhamsted has its very own performing arts space – the Vyne Theatre (which has recently been nominated for a Muddy Stilettos award!). We love featuring Vyne events on The Event Hub Dacorum. You can watch performances from the Royal Opera House, the National Theatre and The Royal Ballet aired live in the Vyne Theatre’s beautiful and accessible auditorium, as part of the national artsLIVE scheme. The Vyne Theatre host comedy and music nights, keeping the arts in Berkhamsted well and truly alive. On top of all that, The Vyne Theatre is also a dance school and, from time to time, it presents galas starring its talented students.  Keep your eye on our website for more of their events.

Which summer event will you go to? Robin Hood, Shakespeare, Coronation street party entertainment..?
